35 Scriptural Verses That Talks About Riches and Wealth

Talking about riches and wealth among many Christians always sound awkward; even preaching prosperity in church looks like taking people from salvation and leading them in the path of mammon.

God has a different view concerning this matter. God wants you to prosper above all else even as your soul prospers. Prosperity as defined by dictionary.co:

"Prosperity means -  prosperous circumstances, characterized by financial success or goodfortune."

And some people even feel guilty when they start having financial prosperity. They’ve heard all the ugly stories about rich people, how they are full of pride to how they make their wealth using dubious means and cheating people. They’ve come to know riches as an element of corruption.

3 John 1:2 (KJV)
Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.

The bible talks about the blessings of Abraham, our father, how God blessed him and willed the whole world to him. The same thing was said about Jacob, David, Lot and even Job. The bible recorded that after Job lost everything, including his children, God restored back to him everything in hundred folds.

If God doesn’t want you to be rich, wealthy and prosperous, He would not have taught you how to make wealth and He would not ask you to let Him help you so He can make you rich.

We have done some scripture research on God’s thought on riches and wealth and also what He expects you to do to enjoy them. There are principles for riches and wealth, and you will find some of them here. We selected our verses form different translations, especially the NIV.

Enjoy every piece of it and if you know some that we could have missed, include them in the comment session. We will be happy to share them with other readers.

Every man also to whom God hath given riches and wealth, and hath given him power to eat thereof, and to take his portion, and to rejoice in his labour; this is the gift of God.

Psalm 49:5-7 New International Version (NIV)

Why should I fear when evil days come,
    when wicked deceivers surround me—
those who trust in their wealth
    and boast of their great riches?
No one can redeem the life of another
    or give to God a ransom for them—

King James Bible Job 31:25
If I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because mine hand had gotten much;

Psalm 112:2-4 New International Version (NIV)

Their children will be mighty in the land;
    the generation of the upright will be blessed.
Wealth and riches are in their houses,

    and all her paths are peace.

Proverbs 12:26-28 New International Version (NIV)

26 The righteous choose their friends carefully,
    but the way of the wicked leads them astray.

28 In the way of righteousness there is life;
    along that path is immortality.

Proverbs 13:7-9 New International Version (NIV)
One person pretends to be rich, yet has nothing;
    another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth.

making widows their prey
    and robbing the fatherless.
What will you do on the day of reckoning,
    when disaster comes from afar?
To whom will you run for help?

    his hand is still upraised.

    riches stored in secret places,
so that you may know that I am the Lord,
    the God of Israel, who summons you by name.
For the sake of Jacob my servant,
    of Israel my chosen,
I summon you by name
    and bestow on you a title of honor,
    though you do not acknowledge me.

1 Kings 3:7-14 New International Version (NIV)

“Now, Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David. But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties.Your servant is here among the people you have chosen, a great people, too numerous to count or number. So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?”
10 The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for this. 11 So God said to him, “Since you have asked for this and not for long life or wealth for yourself, nor have asked for the death of your enemies but for discernment in administering justice,12 I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be. 13 Moreover, I will give you what you have not asked for—both wealth and honor—so that in your lifetime you will have no equal among kings. 14 And if you walk in obedience to me and keep my decrees and commands as David your father did, I will give you a long life.”

Jeremiah 9:22-24 New International Version (NIV)
22 Say, “This is what the Lord declares:
“‘Dead bodies will lie
    like dung on the open field,
like cut grain behind the reaper,
    with no one to gather them.’”
23 This is what the Lord says:
“Let not the wise boast of their wisdom
    or the strong boast of their strength
    or the rich boast of their riches,
24 but let the one who boasts boast about this:
    that they have the understanding to know me,
that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness,
    justice and righteousness on earth,
    for in these I delight,”
declares the Lord.

Luke 8:13-15 New International Version (NIV)

13 Those on the rocky ground are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away. 14 The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature. 15 But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.

Luke 16:10-12 New International Version (NIV)

10 “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. 11 So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches? 12 And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else’s property, who will give you property of your own?

Ephesians 1:17-19 New International Version (NIV)

17 I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit[a] of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. 18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, 19 and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength

Philippians 4:18-20 New International Version (NIV)

18 I have received full payment and have more than enough. I am amply supplied, now that I have received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent. 20 To our God and Father be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Psalm 52:6-8 New International Version (NIV)

The righteous will see and fear;
    they will laugh at you, saying,
“Here now is the man
    who did not make God his stronghold
but trusted in his great wealth
    and grew strong by destroying others!”
But I am like an olive tree
    flourishing in the house of God;
I trust in God’s unfailing love
    for ever and ever.

Psalm 73:11-13 New International Version (NIV)

11 They say, “How would God know?

11 At the end of your life you will groan,
    when your flesh and body are spent.

The Lord does not let the righteous go hungry,

    but diligent hands bring wealth.
He who gathers crops in summer is a prudent son,
    but he who sleeps during harvest is a disgraceful son.

Proverbs 10:14-16 New International Version (NIV)

14 The wise store up knowledge,
    but the mouth of a fool invites ruin.

    but poverty is the ruin of the poor.
16 The wages of the righteous is life,
    but the earnings of the wicked are sin and death.

Proverbs 10:21-23 New International Version (NIV)

    but injustice sweeps it away.

Proverbs 28:7-9 New International Version (NIV)

A discerning son heeds instruction,
    but a companion of gluttons disgraces his father.

    even their prayers are detestable.

25 for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment? 26 To the person who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who pleases God. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

The race is not to the swift
    or the battle to the strong,
nor does food come to the wise
    or wealth to the brilliant
    or favor to the learned;
but time and chance happen to them all.
12 Moreover, no one knows when their hour will come:
As fish are caught in a cruel net,
    or birds are taken in a snare,
so people are trapped by evil times
    that fall unexpectedly upon them.

Ezekiel 28:4-6 New International Version (NIV)

He [the benevolent and generous person] scattered abroad, he gave to the poor,
His righteousness endures forever!”
