Owe No Man Nothing

We are living at a time where technology has made things easier and faster for us. Almost everything we need is available at the click of a button. And if it is not available at the moment, then it will be soon. And this has put us in a fast pace whereby we almost forgot how to love.

Romans 13:7 )(NIV)
Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honour, then honour.

Looking at our theme scripture, the bible admonishes us to pay off all debt. We should not find ourselves in a position of debt; and if we are in one, the proper thing is to develop a plan how to get out of it.
Whatever the debt maybe, God does not want you in it. Whether of tangible or non-tangible, pay off your debt – and that includes your taxes, revenue (government, salary, bonuses etc.), respect and honour. Jesus replying the people who was sent by the chief priests and the scribe, said “give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what’s God’s (Luke 20:25)”.

As a Christian, if you owe someone any kind of debt, that should be your priority. This brought to mind the story of the Prophet Elisha and the widow whose husband died and the creditor came knocking. She cried out to Prophet Elisha (just as we pray to God today) about the creditors coming to take her two sons as slaves. Elisha told her to get as much jar as needed, let’s read it:

2  Kings 4: 3-7 (KJV)

Then he said, “Go, borrow vessels from everywhere, from all your neighbours—empty vessels; do not gather just a few. And when you have come in, you shall shut the door behind you and your sons; then pour it into all those vessels, and set aside the full ones.”So she went from him and shut the door behind her and her sons, who brought the vessels to her; and she poured it out. Now it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said to her son, “Bring me another vessel.”And he said to her, “There is not another vessel.” So the oil ceased. Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debt; and you and your sons live on the rest.”

Is that not amazing? All the woman had prior to this time was just a jar of oil. And now, she has become an oil distributor. That is the part that is easily jumps to our faces when we read this story. But there is an important statement that we should read in verse 7 of 2 Kings 4: Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debt; and you and your sons live on the rest.”

The Prophet Elisha instructed her to pay her debt first. That is the same attitude God wants us to have whenever He blesses us and we know there are debts to be paid; God is saying, “go and pay your debt”.

However, reading further our theme scripture:

Romans 13:8 (NIV)

8Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law.

That right there is the only debt you should owe anyone – Love.

And if you are in any form of debt, as you read this God will make a way for you, bless you enough with all things that you require for life.
