It Matters What Name You Call Yourself
We have read the story of Jacob, how he was born a swindler, got into trouble with his brother Esau who sought to kill him, and how Jacob had an encounter with God and his name got changed to Israel.
The first question God asked him was; “what’s your name?” That indicates something worth noting; you are your ‘name’.
Whatever that name means; you are what you call yourself. And this doesn’t just refer to the names you’re given at birth but also what you call yourself along the way.
There is also the story of Eli’s daughter-in-law, who named her son – Ichabod, meaning ‘the glory has departed’.
How could a mother do such a thing? If for nothing, that child will grow up experiencing what he knows not where it comes from. The mother did that because of what her husband and father-in-law brought upon Israel.
In the kingdom of God, what you call yourself is very important. It shouldn’t be a thing of a joke.
If God took His time to fashion you after His likeness and give you His glory, why should you call yourself what God hasn’t called you or destined you to be?
Even if you’re named what you feel is not a good representation of who you are or should be, you can still change it. Jacob did the same thing. Even the Apostle Paul used to be called Saul, and God changed His name in line with the new calling.
You can change yours too. Maybe your parent was going through a hard time when they gave birth to you and called you something that means a – “negative word”, you can still change it.
The meaning of your name should be well-meaning.
What’s your name?
