Time and Chance: Recognising and Seizing Your Moment
Time and Chance in the Bible
The Bible offers countless examples of people whose lives pivoted on recognising their moment and responding with faith, courage, and decisiveness.
Moses and the Burning Bush
Moses’ life could have been one of quiet obscurity. But one day, tending sheep on Mount Horeb, he noticed an extraordinary sight: a bush burning without being consumed. Instead of ignoring it, he turned aside to see it more closely (Exodus 3:3-4). This small act of curiosity and attentiveness led to God commissioning him to deliver Israel from Egypt. Imagine if Moses had dismissed the sight as unimportant—Israel's history might have been different.Joseph in Pharaoh’s Court
Joseph’s journey was riddled with adversity: betrayal by his brothers, slavery, and imprisonment. But he remained faithful, prepared, and ready for his moment. When Pharaoh’s butler remembered Joseph’s ability to interpret dreams, Joseph seized the opportunity to help Pharaoh (Genesis 41). His insight not only saved Egypt from famine but also positioned him as second in command. What if Joseph had let bitterness or fear of failure cloud his judgment? His readiness and faith were key.Samson’s Final Act
After being betrayed and blinded, Samson faced what seemed like a hopeless situation. Yet, in his final moments, he recognised an opportunity. He prayed for strength one last time and brought down the Philistine temple, fulfilling his mission to defeat Israel's enemies (Judges 16:28-30). His story underscores the power of recognising the right moment, even in adversity.Esther Before the King
Esther’s courage to approach King Xerxes, risking her life to save her people, exemplifies seizing the moment. Mordecai’s words to her—“Who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14)—remind us that preparation and purpose align in divine timing.
Adversity: A Test of Readiness
Adversity often presents itself as the ultimate test of preparation and resolve. Proverbs 24:10 states, “If you falter in a time of trouble, how small is your strength!” When challenges arise, they reveal our readiness to seize our moment or our need for growth. In moments of hardship, the key is not to show weakness but to eliminate it by relying on God’s strength and demonstrating resilience.
David and Goliath: David faced a giant when everyone else cowered. His preparation (years of tending sheep and fighting predators) and faith enabled him to turn adversity into a defining victory (1 Samuel 17).
Paul and Silas in Prison: After being beaten and imprisoned, Paul and Silas sang hymns in the night. Their moment came when an earthquake broke their chains, leading to the salvation of the jailer and his family (Acts 16:25-34). Adversity became an opportunity for God’s glory.
Recognising and Acting on Your Moment
Opportunities rarely announce themselves. They often appear disguised as challenges, requiring discernment, courage, and faith. To ensure you don’t miss your moment:
Stay Prepared: Preparation meets opportunity. Be diligent in prayer, personal growth, and the pursuit of your calling. Like Joseph, preparation during quiet seasons equips you for pivotal moments.
Sharpen Your Focus: Distractions can cause you to miss critical opportunities. Keep your eyes on God’s purpose for your life.
Eliminate Weaknesses: Adversity often exposes vulnerabilities. Strengthen areas where you falter, spiritually and otherwise. Daniel, for example, consistently prayed despite threats, demonstrating unwavering faith (Daniel 6).
Trust God’s Timing: Divine timing is perfect. Don’t rush or fear delays; trust that God is orchestrating your steps.
Seize the Moment
As Christians, we are called to recognise the moments God places before us. Whether these come in the form of opportunities or challenges, how we respond matters. Don’t let fear, doubt, or unpreparedness rob you of your breakthrough. Instead, cultivate a spirit of readiness, rely on God’s strength, and act decisively.
Like Moses, Joseph, Samson, and others, your preparation today is for that one pivotal moment. Recognise it. Take advantage of it. And, through God’s grace, rise to the occasion.
