Have You Seen This Film by Tyler Perry – Acrimony? You Should.

I just watched the movie – Acrimony after many talks about it, and here is my thought.

The whole point is that I enjoyed watching it as much as they enjoyed making it, learned a lot too from an entrepreneur point of view (pov).

At first, I was looking for a fully dramatic emotional film, even though it was filled with that, I like the introduction of the startup life and hustle.

I would like to share my thought and what I learned from watching the film.

-       Forgiveness is non-negotiable
-       Do not settle for less than your worth

Let’s start with the first one. Remember, that our post on forgiveness and how you should have mercy on anyone that has offended you with cheerfulness? This is where it comes into play.

The lady Melinda (Taraji P. Henson) had an issue from when she was young – an uncontrolled anger and never fixed it. Even though she had good intentions towards the man she dated and married, there was still a baggage from her past that she didn’t throw away.

She still feels hurt that her husband (Robert) they’re dating cheated on her. And that pain never went away even with time. For those that still think time heals all wound; I would say active forgiveness heals all wound.

Now, after many events and with the help of her sisters, she opted for divorce from her husband. Robert who knew he hasn’t been living up to his expected dreams but hoping his breakthrough would come soon because of his startup that he is working on, wouldn’t give her the divorce without pleading with her to withdraw it. Well, she didn’t and they divorced.

Now, everybody was happy, especially her sisters and of course, except the ex-husband - Robert.

Now, days went by and the man found himself sleeping out at different places. Even took the job of a dishwasher somewhere while the ex-wife tried dating someone else so she can forget the miserable marriage she deceived herself into.

Before the divorce, a certain company was interested in the man’s invention. This meeting was made possible by the same girl he cheated with while still dating his ex-wife, and wanted something emotional in return.

The man refused on all occasion.

Well, the meeting was fixed and the man went into a surprise offer of $800,000 for his property. Huge sum? Not for this man. He considered it too small and turned them down.

You would think he would have taken it as it would have helped to fix a lot of issues back home. Yea, I thought so too because I didn’t want him to lose his wife and at least get some respect from his in-laws.

And as your guess was, everybody wondered why he didn’t collect the offer because his ex-wife had mortgaged the house she inherited from her mother for him.

But, the only man saw what we didn’t see. He knew the worth of his invention. He thought it was a world changer.

It can only take great effort not to accept such when you’re desperate for a better life.

The same company turned around, offered him $75,000,000 box and he still got to keep his full IP rights.

And yes, that girl made it all happened. And both of them lived their life on a new level filled with riches. He bought her everything he promised to get his ex-wife if she can only give him more time.

He was a generous man though because he bought the ex-wife mum’s house back and gave her the keys plus a $10,000,000 for taking the risk to love him and invest in him.

This kind gesture infuriated the ex-wife more, she became extremely jealous and sort to destroy the ex-husband's happiness after trying to get back but couldn’t.

How sad!

You should go see the film for yourself.

The lessons?

+ It is very important that as you go through life especially as a startup founder or entrepreneur, you should never be desperate to accept less than what you’re worth.

+ Don’t give out equity that will eventually become trouble for you. The Bible talked about the bread that becomes stone in the mouth after the sweet taste is gone.

+ Two things – always forgive wholeheartedly so that your father in heaven will forgive you too. No need for an extra useless baggage in this your journey. And know your worth, not by assumption but by critically looking at the matter.
